Suma

Suma is a fictional restaurant and cocktail bar with a focus on contemporary Japanese cuisine. The name references fusuma, sliding panels of wood covered in paper that segment spaces within a room.
I created a custom wordmark that appears to be "mid-slide," capturing Suma's energetic spirit. Type is set in Triptych Grotesque, Italick, and Roman, which are occasionally interrupted by slashes and hairline brackets as a nod to the partitions that shift from side to side. The typeface Appare from Tegakiya Honpo adds an approachability and coziness that Suma looks to cultivate.
To design the website, I continued to play with the idea of spatial segmentation through the use of bordered containers. Art direction involved feeding phrases into the DALL·E 2 AI system and editing the photorealistic results.
